For most Americans fireworks are part of our 4th of July celebration.  I remember fondly the joy on my Grandfather’s face as he set fireworks off in the yard.  The men in my family enjoyed making things explode.   But before you invite over your neighbors for your backyard firework display you need to know what fireworks are legal in MD?

Good question, right?  The answer is that most fireworks in Maryland are illegal!  Actually in Harford county there is a ban on all consumer fireworks.   It might not seem like a big deal to host a BBQ & set off a couple of bottle rockets, until one lands on your roof!  Or a spark lands on a guest and leaves them with a really bad burn (this actually happened to a good friend).  According to the National Fire Protection Association more fires are reported on the 4th of July than on any other day of the year.  And more than half of the fires are caused by fireworks.

Once the fire is out or the guest has been treated by the hospital, you decide it’s time to call your homeowner’s insurance carrier.  If you’re calling an agent at American Insurance & Financial Services, then we are going to have to give you the bad news that your claim is NOT COVERED by your policy.  The carrier is pretty firm on this because fireworks are illegal in Maryland.  All insurance policies exclude coverage for claims stemming from illegal activities.  The good news is that there are plenty of public firework displays in our area.  Grab a blanket and attend one the following displays:
Jacksonville  -  June 29, 2013
Bel Air -  July 4, 2013
Havre de Grace  -   July 6, 2013
Baltimore City -  July 4, 2013

We at American Insurance & Financial Services hope that you enjoy all you’re 4th of July festivities, but leave the fireworks to the professionals.
