What better way to spend the long hot hazy days of summer than at the pool?  Kids love the pool, but parents need to be on high alert when kids are in the pool.  Statistics show that drowning is the #1 cause of death for children 1 to 3 years old, and according to the Center for Disease Control, over 3,200 people drown each year.   How can parents keep their children safe while they enjoy one of the great pleasures of childhood?  There are several rules that pool owners should follow to prevent accidents and decrease potential liability exposure.

1. Install a fence around the pool area.
2. Install door alarms, locks and safety covers.
3. Never leave small children unsupervised in or around the pool.
4. Keep children away from pool fliters – the suction may injure the child or prevent them from reaching the surface of the water.
5. Teach your child to swim as early as possible.
6. Don’t swim alone or allow other to swim alone.
7. Don’t allow people who have been drinking alcohol to swim.
8. Don’t allow people to dive into shallow water.
9. Keep ring buoys & reaching poles near the pool in case of an emergency.
10. Have adults living in the household take basic first aid & CPR training.

Summer is an excellent time to set up an account review with an agent at American Insurance.  Also, we at American Insurance recommend getting an umbrella insurance policy if you own a pool for an extra layer of insurance protection.  Increased liability coverage is not very expensive!
